Lagos LG Poll Sh*ck: APC Sweeps All 20 Chairmanship Seats, PDP Grabs Only One Councillorship

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has achieved a complete victory in the recently concluded Lagos State Local Government elections, winning all 20 chairmanship seats and further solidifying its stronghold on grassroots politics within the state.

On Sunday, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) confirmed that the APC also secured 375 out of 376 councillorship positions. The only exception was Ward D in Yaba, where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed a rare win.

The elections, conducted on Saturday across 13,325 polling units, allowed residents to choose their local government chairmen and councillors for 20 LGAs and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Although Lagos boasts over seven million registered voters, turnout appeared low in several areas. However, LASIEC noted that the swift voting process may have led to an underestimation of participation.

Speaking after the election, LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), stated, “No political party was excluded from the process. It was transparent and open to all.”

Responding to concerns over voter apathy, she added, “Someone told me it took him just five minutes to cast his vote. So it’s hard to truly gauge turnout—what seemed like low participation in one area might not be the same elsewhere.”

She acknowledged some logistical issues, particularly in remote communities, but assured that both sensitive and non-sensitive materials were eventually delivered to all polling units.

While the election was largely peaceful, isolated reports of voter intimidation and delays in the arrival of materials surfaced. However, there were no major incidents of violence.

Out of the 19 registered political parties, only 15 participated in the elections. APC was the only party to present candidates across all LGAs and LCDAs, while PDP and the Labour Party fielded fewer candidates.

The elections covered major LGAs such as Agege, Alimosho, Ikeja, Mushin, Surulere, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Eti-Osa, along with LCDAs like Yaba, Ojokoro, Ikorodu West, Ijede, Bariga, and Itire-Ikate.
