Lagos Police Officer K!lled After Being Run Over During Stop-And-Search Operation

A police Sergeant, Johnson Okediji, has died after he was allegedly knocked down and dragged by a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in Egbeda, Lagos State.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the incident occurred on Saturday, September 26, 2026, along Olugbede Street in the Egbeda area of Lagos.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, disclosed the incident while briefing journalists on the activities of the command during the month.

According to the police commissioner, officers had flagged down a Lexus ES 350 with registration number FKJ 223 KX, allegedly driven by 20-year-old Olumide Olusola. The driver reportedly stopped initially but suddenly accelerated as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side of the vehicle.

CP Fatai said the vehicle struck the officer and dragged him for several metres despite efforts by fellow officers and passers-by to stop the driver. The suspect was subsequently pursued and arrested.

The commissioner said Sergeant Okediji sustained multiple fractures and severe head injuries in the incident. He was initially taken to a nearby hospital before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His remains were reportedly deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the Lexus was recovered and taken to a police station.

During a brief interview with journalists after his arrest, Olusola reportedly denied intentionally killing the officer. He claimed that the vehicle developed brake failure and that he was unable to stop despite his efforts.

“I did not kill the policeman intentionally; it was due to the vehicle’s brake failure,” the suspect said.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation as authorities continue to establish what led to the fatal encounter.
