Lagos Shuts Down! Govt Declares August 20 Public Holiday For Isese Day Celebration

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the holiday to enable traditional worshippers and residents to fully take part in the observance, which is dedicated to promoting and preserving indigenous heritage.
The announcement was conveyed in a circular issued by the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, on Monday, August 18, 2025, and distributed to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
According to the circular, the decision reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions and safeguarding Yoruba cultural values.
It stated: “Mr. Governor has approved that Wednesday, 20th August 2025 be declared a work-free day for public servants in the state. Consequently, work resumes on Thursday, 21st August 2025 at 8:00 a.m.”
Mr. Agoro further instructed all accounting officers to ensure the information is widely circulated within their respective agencies.
Isese Day has become a permanent feature in Lagos State’s calendar, serving as a tribute to traditional religion and a celebration of cultural pride among the Yoruba people. The holiday is widely regarded as a significant step in recognising and honouring Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage.
