However, for us, it symbolizes a societal tragedy where certain individuals have sunk to sub-human levels, exhibiting impunity and brutality, demonstrating a blatant disregard for everything and everyone, even at the expense of lives, including their own.
On January 2, 2024, Governor Sanwo-Olu took action against a soldier and other motorcycle riders who violated traffic laws on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, enacted by the state in August 2012. The governor, returning from the Lagos State University (LASU) after inaugurating a project sponsored by Femi Gbajabiamila, the chief of staff to President Bola Tinubu, impounded motorcycles and apprehended some riders.
Among the offenders was a Lance Corporal in the Nigerian Army, who, despite being subject to enforcing the law, was arrested with his bike. The soldier’s insistence that his military status exempted him from arrest angered the governor, leading to orders for his confinement in a vehicle with the intent to lock him up.
We unequivocally condemn the actions of the errant soldier, who, in defiance of the very laws he was meant to uphold, flouted traffic rules. Responses from Lagosians have varied, with some arguing that the governor should not have apprehended the soldier and other riders, considering the prevalence of driving against traffic as a norm in Lagos, often involving government officials, law enforcement agents, and transport workers.
The governor faced severe criticism, particularly highlighted by a junior military officer in a viral video berating the governor for the arrest of his colleague. This incident underscores a critical issue—the executive governor, who is the chief security and law enforcement officer of the state, being scorned by a soldier. This scenario is especially troubling in a civil society where the military should be subordinate to civilian authority and uphold discipline and order.
We condemn both the soldier’s disregard for the law and the impudence displayed in defense of indefensible actions. Riding against traffic poses serious risks, including traffic congestion, fatal accidents, and loss of lives, making it imperative for all citizens, regardless of their status, to abide by traffic regulations.
