“While EKEDC disconnected the facility over outstanding payments, LUTH maintains backup power systems,” Oluwole explained. “The main impact was felt at the College of Medicine, which shares power infrastructure with LUTH but lacks backup facilities for student hostels.”

He further elaborated, “LUTH itself was able to maintain operations with its generators and solar power, minimizing the impact. We have since restored power following partial payment of the outstanding bill, and we are actively negotiating with EKEDC to settle the remaining balance.”

The disruption particularly affected medical student hostels, prompting a peaceful protest by students. The hospital management responded with significant payments towards the outstanding bill, including N80 million on Thursday and an additional N50 million on Friday. However, a balance of N145 million reportedly remains unresolved.

Previously, LUTH had relied on its internal power infrastructure before transitioning to EKEDC, citing cost considerations. The current situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by public institutions in managing electricity costs across Nigeria.
