Due to the declining standard of living, many Nigerians are giving less to those in need. Recent observations by Economy & Lifestyle reveal that roadside beggars, who typically stop begging by 5 p.m., are now extending their hours into the night to meet daily targets.
Hauwa Garba, a mother of three who relies on begging for her livelihood, shared her experience: “People hardly give us money nowadays. I’ve been begging since 2018, and back then, I would receive N500 or N200, along with clothes and food for myself and my children. Now, people don’t even glance at us. The act of giving has diminished significantly. The most I received today was N100.
“Food distributions are rare now, and when they occur, the portions are much smaller than before. It’s hard to come by basic necessities like clothes, medicine, or diapers, which used to be common. People now tend to give these items to those closer to them.
“I don’t blame them; it’s the poor economy affecting us all.”
