ECOWAS, originally comprising 15 countries—Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo—has seen its membership reduced to 12. Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali withdrew in 2024 following military takeovers in their countries.

At the 42nd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff held at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Lawan praised the Defence Chiefs for their efforts in maintaining regional security. He emphasized the importance of parliamentary support for ECOWAS, including the allocation of resources necessary to ensure the security of West African nations.

As Chair of the Senate Committee on Defence, Lawan called on the Defence Chiefs to work towards restoring democratic governance in countries affected by military coups. He stated, “We must ensure that democracy continues to thrive in our subregion. We are currently challenged by some countries that have departed from democratic governance. We must persist in our efforts to restore democracy.”

Lawan also expressed gratitude for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu as Chairman of ECOWAS at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government. He assured that the Nigerian National Assembly would continue to prioritize security issues and support ECOWAS institutions.

“We, the Nigerian parliament, will consistently advocate for security and support ECOWAS, recognizing that our safety and security are interconnected with the resources approved for these institutions.
