Okwuegbu Egenti, Acting Director of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Office, disclosed this during interviews with the inmates, who face charges predominantly related to drugs, theft, murder, and conspiracy.
Egenti highlighted the case of Mr. Adamu Lawal, a keke driver, who claimed innocence after unknowingly transporting drugs. Despite his circumstances, he has been detained for 14 months without bail by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Another poignant case involves a man imprisoned following the death of his wife due to hardship. These instances underscore the complexities faced by inmates awaiting justice.
Egenti emphasized that many of the inmates are youths involved in drug-related activities, some having spent considerable time in custody before reaching Kuje Prison.
Furthermore, LACON’s assessment with Jacob Ogbe, the welfare officer, revealed a treatment center established five years ago for drug abuse victims. Upon completion of treatment, certificates are issued to signify rehabilitation efforts.
The Acting Director FCT Office urged the Federal Government to create employment opportunities for Nigerian youths, including those in prisons, to facilitate their reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
