Leverkusen Boss Breaks Silence On Victor Boniface’s Europa League Omission

Published

Bayer Leverkusen manager Carles Martinez has explained why Nigerian striker Victor Boniface was excluded from the club’s UEFA Europa League squad despite showing promising form during pre-season.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Boniface’s omission was largely influenced by a knee problem that affected his fitness during the club’s preparations. Martinez explained that the 25-year-old was still experiencing discomfort at the time the squad decision was made and was considerably short of full physical fitness.

The Leverkusen manager, however, revealed that Boniface’s condition has improved significantly, with his knee responding better to treatment. Although the striker still experiences occasional minor problems, Martinez believes the progress is encouraging.

Martinez expressed optimism that Boniface can overcome his fitness difficulties and enjoy a much better campaign, stressing that the Nigerian remains an important part of his plans at the German club.

The coach also indicated that Boniface could have a significant role to play once he reaches full fitness, particularly in matches where Leverkusen require an attacking boost or a goal.

Martinez said he would welcome continued questions about Boniface’s absence if they mean the striker continues to make progress, suggesting that the forward’s improvement could eventually make his Europa League omission a distant memory.

The Leverkusen boss added that the club would continue supporting Boniface as he works towards regaining his best physical condition, with the ultimate target being for the striker to return to 100 per cent fitness in the coming months or before the end of the season.

Boniface will therefore continue his recovery and fitness programme as he looks to establish himself in Martinez’s plans and make a stronger impact for Leverkusen once fully fit.
