A 46-year-old man from India received a life sentence for using a sickle to slice open his 8-month pregnant wife’s abdomen, driven by a desire to determine the unborn baby’s gender.
Panna Lal, residing in Badaun’s Civil Lines, Uttar Pradesh, assaulted his wife, Anita Devi, in September 2020. The couple, married for 25 years with five daughters, frequently clashed as Panna Lal yearned for a son. Despite Anita’s family’s efforts to mediate, Panna Lal persisted, threatening divorce and remarriage to ensure a male heir.
On the day of the incident, another argument erupted over the baby’s gender. Threatening to cut Anita’s stomach to confirm the fetus’s sex, Panna Lal attacked her with a sickle amid her resistance, causing severe injuries. Anita recounted in court that the wound was deep enough to expose her intestines.
