The election takes place amid regional tensions concerning the Gaza conflict, Iran’s nuclear program dispute with Western nations, and domestic dissatisfaction stemming from the country’s economy under sanctions.

In the initial round last week, Pezeshkian, the sole reformist candidate, secured the highest vote share at approximately 42%, while former nuclear negotiator Jalili followed closely with 39%, according to Iran’s electoral authorities. The turnout stood at 40%, marking the lowest participation rate in any presidential election since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

In a televised address on Wednesday, Khamenei urged a higher voter turnout for the runoff, emphasizing its critical importance despite the lower participation in the first round.

The runoff has seen the candidates engaging in debates focusing on Iran’s economic challenges, international relations, voter engagement issues, and internet regulations.

Pezeshkian, a 69-year-old cardiac surgeon representing Tabriz in parliament since 2008, enjoys the endorsement of Iran’s primary reformist coalition, with former presidents Mohammad Khatami and Hassan Rouhani lending their support to his candidacy.
