Major Political Twist: New Nigeria Peoples Party Shuts Door On Rabiu Kwankwaso Over ADC Plan

He made the statement on Sunday in Lagos while responding to Kwankwaso’s decision to leave the NNPP.

Kwankwaso had announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect after serving as its presidential candidate in the 2023 general election. He explained that his move was driven by the need to join another platform he believes has better prospects for driving change in the country. He is expected to officially join the ADC on March 30.

However, Aniebonam insisted that the NNPP would not follow him. He said only a small number of individuals within the Kwankwasiyya movement may choose to align with Kwankwaso, while others have already moved to different political parties, including the All Progressives Congress.

He also dismissed a memo attributed to Ahmed Ajuji, urging members to remain in the party, stating that Ajuji and others associated with the Kwankwasiyya faction had already been expelled following court decisions and therefore had no authority to speak for the NNPP.

Aniebonam further stated that Kwankwaso would not be allowed to return to the party or represent it in any future election, adding that the NNPP had already moved forward and begun discussions with prospective candidates for the 2027 elections.

He noted that lessons had been learned from the 2023 election, stressing that future candidates would emerge through proper internal processes rather than being imposed.

While wishing Kwankwaso success in his new political path, Aniebonam said the NNPP remains open to alliances with like-minded parties ahead of the 2027 elections, but any such decisions would be made collectively by party members.
