Makinde Reacts To Oriire Kidnap Crisis, Launches Anti-Violent Crime Unit In Oyo

Makinde gave the assurance during the inauguration of the Oyo State Police Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and its Oversight Committee, held at the Police Command Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.

He described the initiative as the first of its kind in the South-West, noting that it reflects a shared determination by the government and security agencies to strengthen public safety and improve crime response.

The governor commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, alongside other security stakeholders in the state, for their continued efforts in maintaining relative peace in Oyo.

He expressed confidence that the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit would enhance the fight against violent crime and contribute to lasting peace, stability, and security in the state and beyond.

Makinde also assured that his administration would continue to provide the necessary logistical and institutional support to enable security agencies to carry out their duties effectively.

Oriire Abduction

Reacting to the recent abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area, Makinde sympathised with the affected families and described the attack as a painful reminder of the need for constant vigilance and proactive security measures.

He said the government is working closely with security agencies to investigate the incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The governor urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to remain alert and promptly report suspicious activities to security authorities.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustained collaboration with security agencies to curb crime and protect citizens.

Police Reforms

In his remarks, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, described the launch of the Violent Crime Response Unit as a significant step in policing reforms.

He said the unit was designed to improve professionalism, accountability, and rapid response to violent crimes, in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police.

According to him, personnel deployed to the unit were carefully selected from various divisions based on discipline, competence, integrity, and operational experience.

Olugbenga also commended the state government for its consistent support for security operations, noting that such collaboration has strengthened peace efforts in Oyo State.

Stakeholder Reactions

Stakeholders, including representatives of community peace initiatives and human rights bodies, praised the development, describing it as a major boost to public safety and police effectiveness.

They also commended both the state government and the Nigeria Police Force for their renewed commitment to protecting lives, enhancing trust, and improving security coordination across the state.
