Topba was ambushed on March 12, 2023, while traveling from his community, Zaakpo, in the Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State to Port Harcourt. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds, leaving him critically injured.
Three other suspects linked to the attack are currently in custody at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre, awaiting trial following a remand order from a State High Court. Akpobari, who is also known by the alias “Bon Satan,” was apprehended by detectives from the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Rivers State Police Command.
During Akpobari’s appearance in court for a remand hearing initiated by Commissioner of Police Mohammed Mustapha, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Rosemary Banigo, stated that she lacked jurisdiction over the case. Consequently, the charges were not read, and no plea was entered.
Chief Magistrate Banigo ordered that the case file be sent to the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice and adjourned the hearing to November 12, 2024, for proper arraignment and trial. Akpobari faces several charges, including attempted murder, cultism, and illegal possession of firearms.
