Responding to the call, officers from the Nsukka Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad arrived at a home on Orba Road in Nsukka Local Government Area, where they found that the young girl, Zinachukwu Ugwu, had been killed. The suspect, 30-year-old Nweke Chukwuemeka, was detained at the scene.

The girl’s body was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead and subsequently moved to the mortuary. Police recovered a knife, suspected Indian hemp, and what appeared to be a charm from the suspect.

Initial investigations show that Chukwuemeka, a resident of the same compound as the victim’s family and originally from Umuagu-Ozalla in Nkanu West, had previously attempted to attack other neighbors before targeting the child. He entered the victim’s apartment while she was asleep and fatally attacked her.

The child’s mother had fled with her other children but returned to find her daughter harmed. Chukwuemeka admitted to the crime, citing influence from Indian hemp, methamphetamine (known locally as “Mkpuru-mmiri”), and Action Bitters.

He also revealed that he was a member of the Vikings Confraternity and had previously killed a rival gang member in Jos, Plateau State in 2022.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, denounced the crime as heinous and assured that justice would be pursued. He extended condolences to the victim’s family and instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to conduct a thorough investigation. Uzuegbu urged residents to stay vigilant to prevent such tragedies.
