The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and shipping companies under the Shipping Agencies, Clearing, and Forwarding Employers Association (SACFEA) have finalized an agreement on minimum standards for the shipping industry, ending nearly 20 years of unsuccessful negotiations.

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) played a crucial role in facilitating the agreement on the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which now establishes new pay and benefit standards for workers in Nigeria’s shipping sector.

During the signing ceremony in Lagos, SACFEA President Mrs. Boma Alabi (SAN) highlighted that the new minimum conditions for shipping industry workers will be the highest in the country.

She stated, “The most significant aspect is that by setting a minimum standard for the shipping industry, we have surpassed other sectors in Nigeria. The national minimum wage stands at N70,000, and we know the effort required to achieve that.

“With this agreement, our minimum wage is now N200,000, nearly triple the national minimum wage.”
