While expressing concerns about the security situation in the states, the INEC chairman noted that such a substantial deployment necessitates a secure environment, which falls beyond the immediate responsibilities of the commission.

Yakubu mentioned that the commission is troubled by the ongoing insecurity and election-related violence in the three states. However, he also stated that they have received assurances of adequate deployment from security agencies.

He stated, “Over the next three weeks, off-cycle governorship elections are scheduled to take place in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States.

These three elections will involve 5,409,438 registered voters casting their ballots in 10,510 polling units spread across 649 electoral wards in 56 local government areas.

“All non-sensitive election materials have been delivered to the three states. Other preparatory activities, including training, are proceeding as planned.

Valuable insights from the 2023 General Election have been applied to enhance performance in the upcoming elections.

“Last week, we conducted a mock accreditation involving real voters at designated polling units in the three states. This exercise had two primary objectives.

First, to assess the effectiveness of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), especially for biometric voter authentication. Second, to upload the results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

Both aspects of the test were successful. We anticipate improved BVAS performance in voter accreditation and result uploading in the upcoming elections.”
