On October 22, the Transmission Company of Nigeria reported a significant outage affecting the North-East, North-West, and parts of North-Central Nigeria, caused by the tripping of the 330-kilovolt (kV) Ugwaji-Apir double circuit transmission lines. The situation was further exacerbated when insurgents vandalized the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, which supplies power to the North, according to Nafisatu Ali, Executive Director of the Independent System Operator.
In response to the crisis, President Bola Tinubu has directed the military to secure the repair teams working on the damaged power lines. Adelabu indicated that as a temporary solution, power would be supplied via the Ugwuaji-Makurdi transmission line, which is expected to serve about 80% of the affected states.
āPower will be restored to the North in two to three days,ā Adelabu confirmed. āWe will utilize the Ugwuaji-Makurdi transmission line in the interim.ā He added that efforts are ongoing to reach the damaged grid with support from security agencies.
Once access is secured, repairs will commence, leading to a full restoration of power. Adelabu assured that the repairs should be completed within 14 days.
