Ministers Removed By President Tinubu: The Missteps Leading To Their Dismissal
Ministers Removed By President Tinubu: The Missteps Leading To Their DismissalPresident Bola Tinubu made a significant cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday, dismissing six ministers for failing to meet public expectations and for behaviors that embarrassed his administration. Sources close to the presidency told Saturday Vanguard that these ministers not only underperformed but also acted in ways that contradicted the principles of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
A confidant of President Tinubu explained the rationale behind the dismissals: “The conduct of some ministers was contrary to the Renewed Hope Agenda. They were undermining the President and subjecting Nigeria to ridicule internationally. A minister working against the President’s anti-corruption efforts cannot expect to remain in the cabinet. Their removal was overdue.”
The ousted ministers include Uju Kennedy Ohanenye (Ministry of Women Affairs), Lola Ade-John (Tourism), Prof. Tahir Mamman (Education), Abdullahi Mohammed Gwarzo (State for Housing and Urban Development), and Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim (Youth Development). Additionally, Betta Edu, previously suspended from her role in Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, was notably absent from recent cabinet activities.
This reshuffle aligns with President Tinubu’s aim to reinforce his administration’s policy goals and public expectations, particularly focusing on transparency and efficiency in governance.
Key Issues Linked to the Dismissed Ministers
Betta Edu
Betta Edu was suspended on January 8, 2024, following demands for an investigation into a leaked memo directing the Accountant-General to pay N585 million into a private account linked to a project accountant in her ministry. Although Edu claimed the payment was intended for vulnerable groups, the controversy led to her exclusion from the cabinet.
Tahir Mamman
As the Education Minister, Mamman faced backlash for proposing an 18-year age limit for senior school certificate examinations, which was widely criticized. His tenure was marked by allegations of misinformation that strained diplomatic relations with neighboring countries and accusations of mismanagement within the education sector, including issues with the National Youth Service Corps.
Uju Kennedy Ohanenye
Ohanenye was one of the most controversial ministers since her appointment. Her actions included disrupting events that lacked her ministry’s approval and engaging in conflicts with the House of Representatives over alleged financial mismanagement. She also threatened legal action against the UN for not releasing funds meant for Nigeria, a move that drew skepticism and criticism.
These dismissals signal President Tinubu’s commitment to aligning his administration with the expectations of Nigerians and addressing issues of accountability within his cabinet.
