Chairman of the Committee, Ginger Onwusibe, issued a seven-day ultimatum to Binance Holdings LTD. management during a panel session, requiring their appearance before the committee by March 4, 2024.

Binance, an online cryptocurrency exchange, has come under scrutiny by the Central Bank of Nigeria for suspected involvement in illicit financial activities, including money laundering.

Onwusibe emphasized the committee’s readiness to exercise its constitutional authority if Binance Holdings fails to comply with the summons. He expressed concern over the Chief Executive’s repeated refusal to engage with the committee despite multiple invitations, citing a blatant disregard for Nigerian business and financial laws.

The committee initially requested the presence of Binance’s Managing Director through a letter dated December 12, 2023. Despite subsequent reminders, the company has failed to attend the scheduled hearings.

Onwusibe reiterated the committee’s commitment to combating financial crimes and safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests, particularly amid prevailing economic challenges. He highlighted the seriousness of the allegations against Binance, stressing the imperative of preserving tax revenue and preventing illicit financing of terrorism.

Furthermore, Onwusibe underscored the committee’s duty to protect Nigerian investors from exploitative practices, emphasizing the need for companies like Binance to fulfill their tax obligations and establish accessible channels for customer grievances.
