The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has underscored the significance of relocating open drug markets to Coordinated Wholesale Centres (CWCs). Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the agency, conveyed this message during a press conference in response to the recent relocation of open drug markets in Kano.

Adeyeye clarified that the relocation initiative would extend to open drug markets in Lagos, Onitsha, and Aba. She emphasized that this move aligns with the National Drug Distribution Guidelines (NDDG), a decision advocated by the Presidential Committee on Pharmaceutical Sector Reform (PCPSR).

The PCPSR, established in 2003 to formulate strategies for cleansing the drug distribution system in the country, played a pivotal role in the creation of CWCs. Adeyeye highlighted that the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, was instrumental in shaping the concept of CWCs and received wholehearted support for the idea. A clear mandate was provided to NAFDAC and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) to ensure its complete implementation.

Adeyeye stated, “The PCPSR recommended the development of National Drug Distribution Guidelines (NDDG) as a key strategy to coordinate the drug distribution sub-sector. All operators in the open drug markets in Kano, Lagos, Onitsha, and Aba were given a deadline of December 2018 by the then Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, to relocate to CWCs.”

She further explained that the NDDG entrusts regulatory agencies, such as the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) and NAFDAC, with the responsibility of ensuring full implementation and compliance by the relevant stakeholders.
