National Labour Congress Calls For Rejection Of Bill Threatening Supreme Court’s LG Autonomy Decision In AbiaThe Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abia State has called on the state Speaker to reject a proposed Local Government bill that allegedly seeks to divert council funds to the state government. In a letter dated October 25, 2024 (ref: NLC/ABSC/AHA/VOL.11/001), NLC leaders Ogbonnaya Okoro and Emma Alozie expressed concerns that the bill would allocate 90% of Local Government funds to the state, leaving only 10% for local administration.

The NLC condemned the bill as a significant infringement on Local Government autonomy and a violation of the Supreme Court’s July 11, 2024, ruling, which granted financial independence to Local Governments across Nigeria. “We urge you and the entire House to reject the bill from further consideration. If passed, it will undermine the rights of Local Governments and hinder rural development,” the letter stated.

The NLC praised the Speaker as “a vibrant young man with a promising future in Nigerian politics,” urging him not to succumb to any pressure from the Governor. They warned of the potential legal consequences for violating the Supreme Court judgment, including possible jail terms.

“Do not let the Governor mislead you,” the letter emphasized. “He has immunity that you do not. The judgment stipulates jail terms for anyone circumventing it. The choice is yours.”

The NLC urged the Speaker to prioritize transparency over corruption and to reject the “anti-people and anti-development bill,” calling for a public declaration of support for the Supreme Court’s ruling. They warned that state workers would strongly oppose the bill’s passage.

“Should the House proceed with the bill, the NLC and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees cannot guarantee industrial peace in the Local Governments. We have instructed Labour Leaders in the LGAs to mobilize our members across the 17 Local Government areas if the House continues with this bill,” the NLC stated. They emphasized the need for policies that prioritize workers’ welfare and rural development over harmful legislation.
