In its latest weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet urged Nigerians to take extra precautions as the rainy season intensifies, warning that motorists, farmers, and residents in flood-prone areas face heightened risks.
Northern Region
The forecast indicates isolated thunderstorms with light rains on Monday morning in Adamawa and Taraba. As the day unfolds, more states including Kaduna, Gombe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Bauchi, southern Borno, and Taraba are likely to experience thunderstorms and rainfall.
From Tuesday through Wednesday, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals will dominate, but thunderstorms and rains are expected in Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, Adamawa, Katsina, and Sokoto.
Central Region
A cloudy atmosphere with patches of sunshine is expected early Monday. Isolated thunderstorms with light showers are likely in Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger, the FCT, Benue, and Kogi. Later in the day, moderate rainfall with thunderstorms will spread across most of the region, a trend projected to continue through Wednesday. Plateau and Nasarawa may record heavier rains.
Southern Region
NiMet projects cloudy skies with sunshine intervals on Monday morning, accompanied by light rain and thunderstorms over Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. By afternoon and evening, moderate rainfall with thunderstorms will cover most of the South.
The agency specifically warned of flash floods in Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers, urging local authorities to activate emergency preparedness plans. Similar weather patterns are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, with persistent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Anambra, and Enugu.
NiMet’s Safety Advisories
To minimize risks, NiMet issued the following safety tips:
-
Motorists: Drive carefully during rainfall as roads may become slippery and visibility poor.
-
Farmers: Avoid applying fertilizers or pesticides just before rains to prevent wastage and nutrient loss.
-
Households: Unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorms to guard against power surges.
-
Residents: Stay clear of tall trees, weak buildings, or loose objects that strong winds may topple.
-
Airlines: Obtain updated, airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safer flight planning.
“While the public should remain calm, vigilance is key. Staying updated with daily weather forecasts is the best safeguard during this rainy season,” NiMet stated.
