Nigerians in nine states have collectively spent N312.27 billion on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, according to a report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday. The 2024 Nigeria Residential Energy Demand-Side Survey highlights shifting energy consumption trends in the country, examining the reliance on LPG alongside fuelwood, charcoal, and other cooking and heating sources.

The survey analyzed data from 7,706 households across Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ekiti, Enugu, Kano, Kwara, Oyo, Plateau, and Sokoto states, ensuring representation from all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Data collection occurred over 17 days, from April 19 to May 5, 2024, employing a systematic sampling method.

Key findings indicate that 19.4% of households reported using LPG in the past month, with an average expenditure of N10,239.7 per household. Sokoto State recorded the highest average monthly expenditure at N12,439.3, followed by Enugu at N11,852.2. Conversely, Ekiti State reported the lowest at N8,213.5.

While LPG usage is on the rise, traditional fuels remain prevalent. Fuelwood is used by 67.8% of households for various purposes, with significant reliance noted in states like Bauchi and Sokoto. The survey estimates annual spending on fuelwood at N608.72 billion, averaging N117,347 per household. Charcoal is also significant, with 22% of households utilizing it primarily for cooking.

Access to electricity is another vital aspect, with 58.2% of households connected to the national grid, predominantly in Ekiti (79.7%). However, most of these connections rely on estimated billing rather than pre-paid meters. Solar energy is increasingly utilized, with 4.8% of households using solar home systems or mini-grids, while a similar percentage employs diesel or petrol generators.

During a press briefing, Statistician General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, officially launched the survey. He emphasized the importance of reliable and affordable energy access as a fundamental human right and crucial for economic growth. The survey’s insights are intended to aid policymakers and energy sector stakeholders in addressing rising demand and accessibility challenges.
