NBS Website Hacked By Cybercriminals
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has confirmed that its website was compromised in a recent cyberattack, amid a growing wave of digital threats targeting Nigerian public institutions.

In a statement shared on its X account late Wednesday, the NBS alerted the public, saying, “We regret to inform you that the NBS website has been hacked, and we are currently working to restore it. Please disregard any messages or content posted until the site is fully recovered. Thank you for your understanding.”

At 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, a visit to the NBS website showed a nearly blank page with the message, “Page Hacked.” This breach is part of an alarming rise in cyberattacks aimed at government websites across Nigeria.

In March, a major breach was exposed when it was revealed that the private site XpressVerify.com had gained unauthorized access to National Identification Numbers (NINs) and other personal data of registered Nigerians.

To address these ongoing threats, the federal government has issued more than 30 cybersecurity advisories in the past year. According to Check Point Software Technologies, a cybersecurity firm, Nigeria ranks 19th globally for cyber threats as of July 2024. The firm also noted that Nigerian government agencies are hit by an average of 1,791 cyberattacks every week.
