This appeal was made in a communiqué issued after a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.
The meeting, attended by prominent PDP figures including Governor Muftwang, former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, former governors Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Jonah Jang (Plateau), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), and Idris Wada (Kogi), as well as the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), among others, focused on the issue.
The PDP has faced significant internal divisions, especially before and after the 2023 general elections. The party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has faced criticism for failing to resolve these issues, weakening the party’s overall influence. Damagum assumed the role after the court removed former Chairman Iyorchia Ayu for not implementing necessary reforms.
During the meeting, the North Central PDP leaders strongly emphasized that the chairmanship position should be returned to their zone to fulfill its remaining tenure. They also stressed the importance of unity and peace within the party, urging all stakeholders to work towards building consensus.
The communiqué read: “The stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party reviewed the state of the party, particularly the vacant National Chairman position following Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s exit. The PDP constitution clearly states that any vacant position can be filled by appointment from the respective zone, as outlined in Section 47 (6) of the party’s constitution.”
The statement further urged party leadership to make necessary sacrifices and compromises to restore unity and cohesion, appealing to the goodwill of members from other zones to support the return of the Chairmanship to the North Central Zone to complete its tenure.
