In a statement, NCAA Director-General Chris Najomo clarified that reports suggesting the helicopter was scrapped in 2018 are incorrect.
DAILY POST previously reported that the helicopter, operated by East Wind Aviation for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), crashed at 11:22 a.m. while en route to the FPSO – NUIMS ANTAN oil rig after taking off from the Port Harcourt Military Base.
Of the eight people on board, four bodies have been recovered. An online report claimed the helicopter had been scrapped abroad in 2018, but Najomo asserted that this information is false.
He stated, “The Authority has been alerted to a report by Sahara Reporters concerning the airworthiness of the crashed helicopter. The report claimed the aircraft was initially registered in 2004 as 5N-BGN with Aero Contractors, deregistered to Canada in 2009, and its registration was canceled in September 2018 after being ‘presumably scrapped.’ They questioned how the helicopter was subsequently registered as 5N-BQG in Nigeria before the crash.
