Reactions Emerge As Court Blocks Federal Allocations To Rivers In Wike-Fubara ShowdownNigerians on social media have reacted strongly to the Federal High Court’s ruling halting federal allocations to the Rivers State government. Earlier reports confirmed that the court has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stop releasing monthly funds to Rivers, citing Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s handling of these allocations as unconstitutional.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik issued the ruling, stating that Fubara’s presentation of the 2024 budget to a four-member House of Assembly was a violation of constitutional norms. She emphasized that implementing an unlawful budget constituted a serious breach of the 1999 Constitution.

As a result, the court has barred the CBN, the Accountant General of the Federation, Zenith Bank, and Access Bank from allowing Fubara to access funds from the Consolidated Revenue and Federation Account.

Social media users have shared varied opinions on the decision. @Ihima_Principal criticized the judiciary as being influenced by Abuja politicians, while @Ibirogba2000 noted that the court’s stance reinforces the importance of the House of Assembly and urged cooperation among political factions for peace.

Others voiced their frustrations, with @TheamazingJosh reflecting on the leniency shown to politicians like Wike, and @Oladapomikky1 suggesting that Fubara should take drastic actions against oil companies in the state. Some users, like @Nwa_Anambra, speculated that if Fubara were to govern solely on internally generated revenue, it could lead to significant scrutiny of previous financial practices.

Criticism aimed at Wike was rampant, with many accusing him of undermining governance and exacerbating tensions in Rivers. @djokemegamixer lamented the perceived manipulation of the judiciary, asserting that the citizens of Rivers State are the real victims of these power struggles.

The court had previously dismissed an appeal by Governor Fubara challenging a lower court’s decision that confirmed the legitimacy of the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly. The appellate ruling upheld the lower court’s decision, which invalidated the passage of Rivers State’s N800 billion 2024 budget, requiring Fubara to resubmit it to the proper assembly.
