Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel Emirate, just three days after the death of his father, the late Emir of Gumel.

The appointment was announced on Sunday by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Bala Ibrahim, during a briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Dutse, the state capital.

According to the state government, the appointment followed consultations with the Gumel Emirate Council and traditional kingmakers and was made in accordance with the provisions of the Jigawa State Emirate Council Law.

The government explained that the immediate appointment was aimed at ensuring continuity of leadership and preventing a vacuum following the death of the former emir. It added that the decision was also intended to sustain peace, unity and development within the Gumel Emirate.

The Secretary to the State Government said the new emir previously served as Ciroman Gumel during the reign of his late father, giving him considerable knowledge of the emirate’s traditions, challenges and aspirations.

Bala Ibrahim described Dr Lawan as suitably qualified for the traditional institution, citing his education, experience and familiarity with the people and customs of Gumel.

He further stated that the new emir’s previous position would enable him to build on the achievements and legacy of his late father while providing purposeful leadership to the emirate.

Governor Namadi, according to the state government, called on sons and daughters of Gumel Emirate to support the new traditional ruler and cooperate with him in the interest of peace and development.

The governor also expressed condolences over the passing of the former emir, praying for the repose of his soul and reaffirming the state government’s commitment to protecting traditional institutions as custodians of culture, unity and social stability.

The state government disclosed that the governor would, in due course, present the staff of office to the new emir at a ceremony befitting his position.

Authorities also appealed to traditional stakeholders, community leaders and residents to cooperate with the government to ensure a peaceful and successful installation ceremony.
