According to reports, the destruction took place on Saturday at a secured location in Ipara, situated along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State.
Among the substances destroyed were 123 kg of cocaine, 46.8 kg of heroin, 1.4 million kg of cannabis, 148,000 kg of codeine syrup, 3,244.26 kg of tramadol, 1,544 kg of skuchies, and 111 kg of methamphetamine, among others.
NDLEA Chairman, Mohamed Buba Marwa, who was represented at the event by the Director of Assets and Financial Investigation, Ibrahim Abdul, described the exercise as a strong demonstration of the agency’s unwavering resolve to combat drug trafficking in Nigeria.
He noted that the massive volume of drugs incinerated is a grim reminder of the threat such substances pose to public health, stressing the agency’s duty to ensure they are completely and permanently destroyed.
“The NDLEA operates under a clear mandate to crush these narcotics. We carry out this duty with utmost seriousness and diligence,” Marwa stated.
He further warned those still involved in drug trafficking that Nigeria is no longer a safe haven for such criminal activity.
“Let this serve as a warning — the times have changed. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the political will to end this menace remains strong. NDLEA will continue to go after offenders without hesitation.”
Marwa revealed that in the last four years, 10,572 offenders have been successfully prosecuted and convicted, sending a clear message that there will be no escape from justice.
He also expressed gratitude to Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Seyi Makinde (Oyo) for their continued support of NDLEA operations within their states.
Explaining the reason for the public destruction of the seized drugs, Marwa said:
“Transparency and accountability are key. By making this destruction public, we reaffirm our united front against the toxic grip of drug trafficking in our society.”
