NDLEA Takes Action Against Kwara Lawmaker Linked To Recovered Drugs And Illicit MaterialsThe National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has responded to accusations from Kwara South Senator Yisa Ashiru, who labeled the agency as the most corrupt in Nigeria. In a statement on Monday, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi suggested that the senator’s comments stemmed from personal grievances. He revealed that the senator’s residence in Kwara had been raided following intelligence indicating it was being used as a drug hub. During the operation, two of Ashiru’s aides were arrested, while one escaped.

Babafemi stated, “For a member of the upper chamber to make such an unwarranted accusation led us to investigate the motives behind it. Our findings were alarming and indicated that the senator’s statements were driven by vendetta rather than genuine public interest.”

He elaborated that the senator’s house in Ilorin had been previously searched, resulting in the recovery of drugs and illicit substances. Furthermore, Babafemi mentioned that intelligence indicated some of Ashiru’s associates, referred to as “Omo Senator,” were involved in drug trafficking in Offa, leading to the arrest of one Oluwatosin Odepidan, who was found with methamphetamine and cannabis on June 11, 2023.

Babafemi concluded that the NDLEA’s actions are rooted in credible intelligence and a commitment to addressing drug-related issues, despite the senator’s criticisms.
