Neighbours Rally Together, Raise Two Years Rent To Rescue Tenant From Eviction

A Nigerian man has shared a heartwarming account of how residents in his compound came together to prevent a fellow tenant from being evicted after he reportedly fell six months behind on his rent.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the story was shared by an X user identified as @kenkenlewu, who explained that the tenant had quietly struggled financially despite previously helping other residents in the compound.

The narrator said the man had spent the previous year purchasing fuel to power the water pumping system used by everyone in the compound, without revealing that he was experiencing financial difficulties.

According to the account, the man later mentioned in the compound’s group chat that he was facing challenges at work and had not been paid his salary. Despite the situation, he reportedly continued going to work and interacting normally with his neighbours.

The seriousness of his financial situation became apparent when the landlord’s lawyer arrived at the compound accompanied by police officers to enforce an eviction over the unpaid rent.

As residents gathered to witness what was happening, one of the neighbours reportedly offered to contribute money towards settling the outstanding rent.

The neighbour was quoted as saying, “I’m dropping ₦300k, let’s pay this guy’s rent.”

Two other residents who were reportedly away from the compound at the time also joined the effort, each sending ₦100,000 towards the payment.

The narrator said contributions continued until the neighbours had raised enough money to cover two years of rent for the struggling tenant. After settling the rent, the residents reportedly had ₦120,000 remaining, which was given to the man.

The unexpected intervention reportedly surprised the landlord’s lawyer and the accompanying police officers, as the residents united to ensure that their neighbour did not lose his home.

The story has attracted reactions online, with many social media users praising the residents for their show of solidarity. Others also commended the tenant for previously supporting his neighbours despite dealing with financial difficulties of his own.
