Don’t Expect Your Wife To Suffer Like Your Mother — Man Warns Men
A man has sparked a heated conversation on social media after arguing that wives should not be expected to endure the same hardships their mothers-in-law may have experienced while raising their children.
The man made the remarks in a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, where he challenged the practice of comparing modern wives with mothers who raised children under difficult circumstances.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the man questioned the idea that a woman’s ability to raise several children without assistance should automatically become a standard for her son’s wife.
He pointed out that some men often remind their wives that their mothers successfully raised multiple children without help, but urged them to consider whether their mothers would willingly choose to live under the same circumstances again.
He wrote, “You keep telling your wife that your mother raised six children without help. Have you asked your mother whether she would choose that arrangement again?”
He further argued that the fact that a woman endured certain difficulties without complaining should not necessarily be interpreted as proof that she was comfortable or happy with the situation.
“‘She never complained’ is not the same as ‘she was happy.’ Your mother’s endurance is not a job description for your wife,” he stated.
The comments have since generated mixed reactions, with many social media users supporting the view that marriage should not require women to replicate the hardships endured by previous generations.
One user argued that a mother’s strength should be appreciated rather than used as a benchmark for judging a wife, adding that she might have preferred to receive help if given the opportunity.
Another questioned the tendency to describe child-rearing as primarily a woman’s responsibility, stressing that both parents have roles to play in raising their children.
A different commenter suggested that some mothers may have complained about their struggles but were simply not listened to, while another user shared that his mother had raised him largely on her own after his father died and said he would ensure his future wife would not experience similar hardship.
The discussion has continued to draw attention to expectations surrounding marriage, gender roles, domestic responsibilities and the differences between the experiences of previous generations and those of modern couples.
