NEMA Links Water Shortage To Blaze Destroying Multiple Lagos Structures....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Lagos has identified the absence of a water source as a key factor in the worsening of a fire incident that engulfed four buildings in the Idumota area of Lagos Island Local Government Area. Ibrahim Farinloye, the State Coordinator of NEMA, revealed this during a telephone conversation with BUSHRADIOGIST Metro on Wednesday.

Farinloye highlighted the challenge faced by emergency responders due to the unavailability of water, which could have aided in effectively extinguishing the fire, thus preventing its escalation and minimizing damage.

“The major problem we had today was the lack of a water source. We have over 10 firefighting appliances, and in the whole of Lagos Island, there is nowhere we can source water. So, each of these firefighting appliances had to go about three to four times to fetch water,” Farinloye explained.

He noted that Julius Berger had to supply 30,000 liters of water to support firefighting efforts. Despite the presence of both the Federal Fire Service and the State Fire Service, insufficient water remained a critical issue.

Farinloye emphasized the need for the Lagos Building Control Agency to assess two of the affected buildings to determine their habitability. He also urged traders to collaborate with the government in establishing a nearby water source and training individuals as fire marshals to enhance fire response capabilities.

Regarding the cause of the fire, Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, attributed it to poor housekeeping by traders, compounded by the presence of combustible materials in the vicinity.

Adeseye commended the collaborative efforts of various agencies involved in firefighting, which prevented further escalation of the blaze.

BUSHRADIOGIST Online reported that one of the affected buildings collapsed, and the fire damaged three structures at the Nnamdi Azikiwe and Docemo intersection in Idumota.
