Tinubu Advocates For Supreme Court Justices To Receive N60m Annual Salary....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, approved a bill submitted by President Bola Tinubu for the revision of salaries, allowances, and additional benefits for judicial officers across the country, advancing it to the third reading stage.

Under the proposed bill, judges are set to receive a substantial increase in pay, with the Chief Justice of Nigeria slated to earn an annual basic salary and allowances totaling N64.6 million, a significant raise from the current rate.

Supreme Court justices are also expected to see a substantial rise in their annual basic salaries and regular allowances, each exceeding N60 million annually.

The move garnered support from several Senior Advocates of Nigeria, who argued that adequately compensated judicial officers would be less susceptible to corruption.

The bill aims to amend the Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) Act, No. 6, 2002 (as amended) by removing Section 2(b), Part II of the Schedule to the Act, and any other related provisions concerning judicial office holders.

Upon presidential assent, the legislation is scheduled to come into effect from January 1, 2024.

Key Highlights:

  • The Chief Justice of Nigeria is proposed to receive N64.6 million annually in regular allowances and salary, equating to N5.38 million monthly. Additionally, the CJN is set to receive N13.46 million as an annual basic salary, with non-regular allowances including leave allowance, duty tour allowance, and estacode.
  • Other Supreme Court justices are projected to receive annual regular allowances and basic salaries exceeding N60.47 million each, alongside various non-regular allowances and benefits.
  • The President of the Court of Appeal is expected to earn an annual basic salary of N9.91 million, along with regular and non-regular allowances similar to those of Supreme Court justices.
  • If enacted, each justice of the Court of Appeal would receive annual regular allowances exceeding N44.72 million, along with an annual basic salary of N7.99 million.

Overall, the bill aims to provide significant financial benefits to judicial officers, ensuring their well-being and potentially reducing susceptibility to external influences.
