Madam Alimot, the victim, in an interview with The Nation, narrated her ordeal. She had previously lost 12 of her 15 children and, desperate to save the remaining three, was lured by a radio program that showcased the herbalist, Owolabi Adefemi a.k.a. Ojunu, who claimed to possess the mystical power to heal and provide spiritual solutions.
She recounted her multiple visits to the herbalist’s residence, where she was told of impending doom and the need for continuous sacrificial payments. Her desperation led her to sell two of her properties to meet Ojunu’s ever-increasing demands. To add insult to injury, both her daughter and granddaughter were allegedly seduced by the herbalist.
One of Madam Alimot’s daughters, Bose, attested to the herbalist’s deceit. She spoke of the many twisted tales the herbalist spun, including claims of cows turning into men, promises of wealth, and threatening oaths. CoNTINUE READNG
Defending himself, Owolabi Adefemi dismissed the N19m claim, admitting to only defrauding Madam Alimot of a little over N5m. He also claimed that Bose was his accomplice in the entire operation. Admitting to some of the allegations but downplaying others, he confessed to setting up fake rituals to instill fear and extract money from Madam Alimot.
The case shines a spotlight on the lengths some will go to exploit the desperate and vulnerable in society. The herbalist’s confessions reveal a disturbing mix of deceit, manipulation, and exploitation, further emphasizing the need for individuals to exercise caution when seeking spiritual or traditional interventions.
