New Telecom Tariff Plans For MTN, Airtel, Glo Approved By NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved new tariff guidelines for telecom operators to enhance transparency, improve consumer understanding, and promote fair competition. The guidelines, detailed in a document signed by NCC Executive Vice-Chairman Aminu Maida and posted on the NCC’s website, emphasize full disclosure of tariff components and require operators to provide clear information on promotional materials. The NCC also calls for improved consumer education and transparency in communications.

Operators are required to submit detailed migration plans to transition subscribers to the new tariff structures without compromising service quality. Promotional elements must receive prior NCC approval and be offered as standalone products with clear terms and validity periods.

The NCC has given operators until December 3 to maintain existing bonus-led tariff plans, after which they must transition subscribers to simpler plans. Operators can keep only one bonus-led plan for new subscribers, who will be migrated to standard plans after six months. Promotional bonuses must comply with NCC price regulations and be clearly stated in advertising materials.

The guidelines, effective from July 29, require operators to notify subscribers of any tariff changes with at least 30 days’ notice. Non-compliance may result in penalties, including fines or suspension of tariff approvals.

In a related note, operators have denied claims of an approved tariff increase, with the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators in Nigeria affirming that no such authorization has been granted.
