NHRC Blames Federal Policing Failure For Kaduna Pupils Abduction....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The National Human Rights Commission has attributed the abduction of 286 students and teachers from two schools in Kaduna to the failure of Nigeria’s federal policing system. Anthony Ojukwu, the commission’s Executive Secretary, made this assertion during a stakeholders’ dialogue on state police organized by the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre in Abuja.

The incident occurred when bandits raided the Kuriga area of the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, shooting indiscriminately and abducting the victims. The resulting national outrage has seen condemnation from various quarters including Jama’atu Nasril Islam, Amnesty International, the Parents-Teachers Association of Nigeria, Nigeria Union of Teachers, and the House of Representatives.

Ojukwu stressed that the catastrophe could have been prevented if the protection of the elite and affluent hadn’t been prioritized over the masses. He advocated for the establishment of state police to address banditry and other security challenges plaguing the nation.

“Insecurity in this country is a result of bad governance,” Ojukwu stated, emphasizing the urgent need for action. He criticized the federal police system, tracing its origins to colonial rule and its focus on protecting authorities rather than serving the people. Ojukwu highlighted the disproportionate allocation of police resources, with numerous officers assigned to protect the elite while leaving the general populace vulnerable.

He underscored the glaring security gaps that allowed the abduction of hundreds of students, noting the absence of police presence on critical routes and in schools. Ojukwu emphasized that without a fundamental overhaul of the federal policing system in favor of state police, such incidents of abduction and insecurity would persist.

The NHRC’s stance underscores the pressing need for systemic reforms to address the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria, with the establishment of state police emerging as a crucial step towards achieving lasting security and protection for all citizens.
