Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of NHRC, speaking at the dashboard’s unveiling, emphasized that road accident fatalities severely impact human rights for many families. He urged the government and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to implement urgent and sustainable measures to address the crisis. He cited data from the FRSC and the National Bureau of Statistics, revealing that 1,471 lives had been lost to road crashes in the first quarter of 2024 alone.

The Human Rights Dashboard also reported 305,300 complaints of human rights violations submitted to the NHRC in September 2024, marking a significant rise in such cases. The North-West and North-Central regions recorded the highest numbers of complaints, with violations of religious freedom being the most frequent issue reported.

The dashboard also highlighted violations of human dignity by law enforcement agents, denial of access to justice, and a concerning increase in sexual and gender-based violence, including rape, domestic violence, and child defilement. The rise in cases of child abandonment was attributed to the worsening economic conditions in the country.

States like Kaduna, Benue, Katsina, Plateau, and Sokoto reported the most killings in September, while 141 deaths and 113 kidnapping incidents were documented.
