Notably, the Chiefs from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso were absent, as these countries announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS earlier in 2024. Their absence and the implications of their withdrawal are expected to be key topics of discussion, particularly in addressing the security vacuum and emerging threats related to political instability.

The meeting is set to focus on regional security and explore the possibility of establishing a force to counter security challenges. General Musa emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values and the need for regional intelligence sharing to address the complex security landscape.

ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, noted that the 42nd meeting was delayed due to recent political upheavals, including coups in the region. This delay has provided an opportunity for the chiefs to review the implementation of decisions from the previous meeting.

Attendees included the Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru, Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence Ahmed Lawan, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, and a representative from the National Security Adviser’s office.
