This initiative aims to tackle terrorism and enhance regional security across Nigeria and neighboring countries.
During a briefing with State House correspondents, Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, revealed these plans after President Bola Tinubu hosted China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
Tuggar highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating that working with China would bolster Nigeria’s ability to effectively address shared security threats with neighboring nations.
“We aim to collaborate with countries like China to domesticate the production of both kinetic and non-kinetic military equipment. This will allow us to produce locally without relying on delayed procurement processes,” Tuggar said.
This move aligns with recent remarks by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who emphasized the challenges faced in arms procurement due to lengthy regulatory processes.
General Musa highlighted in an interview with Al Jazeera that delays in delivering essential equipment for frontline troops remain a significant obstacle.
The government’s push for self-reliance in arms production has sparked discussions on leveraging Chinese expertise to establish local manufacturing capabilities.
During a visit to troops in Plateau State, General Musa advocated for the recruitment of skilled citizens to locally produce firearms and military-grade equipment.
Tuggar echoed this stance, stressing that Nigeria is committed to ensuring its security through domestic solutions and leadership in West Africa, particularly in the Sahel region.
