The Oil & Gas Governance Reform Alliance (OGRA) hailed the development as a “historic turnaround” for Nigeria’s petroleum sector. In a statement on Wednesday, OGRA’s Executive Director, Dr. Ibrahim Kalango, said the surge in production signals a clear shift from years of stagnation, operational setbacks, and declining investor interest.
Kalango noted that the Commission’s recent performance demonstrates that Nigeria’s challenge has never been production capacity, but rather regulatory clarity, operational discipline, and consistent leadership across the value chain. He explained that the agency, led by Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, has spent the past year stabilizing an industry previously undermined by uncertainty.
OGRA pointed to renewed investor confidence, rising rig activity, multi-billion-dollar investment commitments, and the approval of field development plans worth roughly $20 billion in the past ten months as proof that the reforms are delivering measurable results.
The group emphasized that consistently exceeding 1.7 million barrels per day is more than a statistical milestone—it reflects growing trust in Nigeria’s petroleum environment among both producers and investors. Kalango added that the long-standing national goal of reaching 2.5 million barrels per day is now more attainable than ever.
OGRA further highlighted that Nigeria’s rig count—nearly 70 this year, with more than 40 actively operating—represents the highest level of upstream activity in almost a decade, underscoring a renewed surge in investor interest.
The alliance also praised the NUPRC’s upcoming oil licensing round scheduled for December 1, 2025, calling it a strategic initiative that will strengthen reserves, attract fresh capital, and ensure Nigeria remains competitive in a rapidly changing global energy market. They stressed that transparent bid processes, regulatory stability, and predictable procedures are essential to sustaining current momentum.
Finally, OGRA underscored the importance of clear national communication and accurate industry reporting in shaping global investor perception. The alliance encouraged the Commission to maintain its reform drive, noting that the recent achievements demonstrate the petroleum sector’s ability to deliver substantial value under strong and effective leadership.
