The NBA asserts that this request aligns with constitutional provisions and has called upon the National Assembly to amend the Constitution to facilitate an expansion in the number of Supreme Court Justices.

The association also advocates for a reduction in the volume of cases reaching the Supreme Court. This reduction would be achieved by limiting the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to specific constitutional matters.

In a statement by Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the President of the NBA, the association underscores that reaching the designated number of Supreme Court Justices is in accordance with Section 230(1)(B) of the Nigerian Constitution.

The NBA President made this appeal during a valedictory court session held in honor of Justice Amina Adamu Augie at the Supreme Court Complex in Abuja.

He expressed concerns over the decreased number of Supreme Court Justices, emphasizing the resulting heavier workload on the justices who are already burdened and inadequately compensated.

The NBA President calls for a constitutional amendment that would both raise the threshold for Supreme Court Justice appointments and curtail the Court’s jurisdiction to specific constitutional matters.
