According to a statement by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, the visit is part of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation’s broader initiative to strengthen relationships with both foreign and local media. During the meeting with senior BBC executives, including Deputy Chief Executive Officer of BBC News and Director of the BBC World Service, Jonathan Munro, Idris emphasized the need for global media outlets to better understand the socio-political and cultural contexts of the regions they cover.
Idris acknowledged the BBC’s role in narrating Nigeria’s political landscape but advocated for more balanced reporting. He encouraged the BBC to highlight Nigeria’s achievements and positive stories that can inspire hope and reflect the country’s progress.
The minister also addressed concerns about misinformation and fake news, calling on the BBC to enhance efforts in combating these issues and collaborating with international partners to uphold credible media practices. He praised the BBC for its expanded language services in Nigeria, which have improved information dissemination and created employment and training opportunities.
