Nigerian Government Firm: No Plans For Foreign Military Bases....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government has refuted claims suggesting the consideration of establishing military bases in Nigeria. Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, clarified the government’s stance in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.

Idris emphasized that the government is cognizant of unfounded rumors circulating in certain circles, insinuating discussions with foreign nations regarding the placement of their military installations within Nigeria’s borders. He categorically stated that neither has the government received nor is it entertaining any propositions from foreign entities regarding the establishment of such bases.

The minister urged the public to dismiss these baseless assertions entirely.

In his statement, Idris declared, “The Federal Government is aware of false alarms being raised in some quarters alleging discussions between the Federal Government of Nigeria and some foreign countries on the siting of foreign military bases in the country. We urge the general public to totally disregard this falsehood.”

He continued, “The Federal Government is not in any such discussion with any foreign country. We have neither received nor are we considering any proposals from any country on the establishment of any foreign military bases in Nigeria. The Nigerian government already enjoys foreign cooperation in tackling ongoing security challenges, and the President remains committed to deepening these partnerships, with the goal of achieving the national security objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Previously, certain Northern opinion leaders cautioned President Tinubu against permitting the United States and French Governments to relocate their military bases from the Sahel to Nigeria. In a letter addressed to him, these leaders highlighted alleged lobbying efforts by the US and French governments aimed at signing new defense agreements, enabling them to redeploy their forces in Nigeria.

Expressing apprehension, the leaders underscored potential risks associated with the establishment of such bases, including concerns about national security, economic implications, and environmental impacts.
