Nigerian Government Launches Initiative To Tackle Unexplained Deaths Among Civil Servants
The Nigerian Government, through the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF), is determined to tackle preventable Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDS) and sudden deaths within its workforce. During a one-day training workshop for 500 officers in the Federal Civil Service, Mahmud Adam Kambari, the Permanent Secretary of the Service Welfare Office (SWO), underscored the government’s awareness of the safety and health of civil servants. He highlighted a concerning trend of rising mortality rates among civil servants, emphasizing the urgent need to address this situation.
Reviewing death notifications received daily for benefit claims, Kambari recognized the imperative to tackle preventable Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDS) and sudden deaths among the workforce. He acknowledged that non-communicable diseases pose a global public health challenge, impacting the health and efficiency of the civil service workforce. The government has prioritized the sensitization of officers to promote healthy living and wellness.
Kambari emphasized that the commitment of the OHCSF to the well-being of its workforce extends beyond a mere policy statement; it is a moral obligation. Dr. Comfort Adeosun, the Director of Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment (OHSE) at the OHCSF, emphasized the significance of workplace wellness in ensuring employee well-being and organizational efficiency. She highlighted the link between personal wellness and productivity, emphasizing the holistic approach the government is taking to address health challenges within the civil service.
