The investigation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) commenced in February 2024, triggered by anomalies detected by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers at the Melbourne Cargo Examination Facility (CEF) within a shipment of paint roller brushes from Vietnam.

Upon closer inspection, four boxes within the consignment revealed hidden compartments containing 8.8kg of heroin. Subsequently, AFP Forensics personnel dismantled and reconstructed the brushes and boxes before returning them to the CEF.

The delivery of the consignment to a location in St Albans led to the arrest of a 26-year-old Nigerian man by AFP officers, who observed him accepting the package. The arrest followed the execution of a warrant at the property, with the suspect apprehended shortly after attempting to flee through a nearby school oval.

The individual faces charges including importing a commercial quantity of heroin and attempting to possess a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported drug, both carrying a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
