Abumusi boldly stated, “I am going to lead Nigerian pensioners naked,” underscoring their determination to demonstrate in the streets without clothing, even if it means facing arrest during the protests. The move comes against the backdrop of ongoing protests in Niger and Kano states, where citizens are expressing dissatisfaction with soaring food prices, emphasizing the pressing need to address the escalating cost of living.

Labor unions are concurrently advocating for a new minimum wage for workers in light of these economic challenges. Simultaneously, pensioners are seeking a revision of the national minimum pension to better reflect the current economic realities.

Abumusi stressed the urgency of ensuring pensioners receive adequate funds to cover their daily expenses. Proposing a national minimum pension of N100,000 to the tripartite committee, in alignment with the N200,000 minimum wage proposed by the Nigeria Labour Congress, he warned that anything less would provoke the ire of pensioners grappling with the prevailing economic hardship.

The National Union of Pensioners (NUP) has shed light on the distressing situation where some state retirees receive shockingly low monthly pensions, ranging from N1000 to N500 and plummeting as low as N450. Abumusi expressed deep concern about this widespread issue, particularly prevalent in Southeastern states, bringing attention to the urgent need for reforms to alleviate the plight of pensioners across the nation.
