Nigeria experienced another nationwide blackout as the national electricity grid collapsed on Monday, December 11, at approximately 1 pm. The system failure reduced electricity generation from 4,032.80 megawatts at noon to a mere 43 megawatts at 1 pm and further dropped to 303 megawatts at 5:00 pm. CONTINUE READING
The collapse affected over 22 electricity plants, with most Distribution Companies (DisCos) confirming that their feeders were out. This incident adds to the numerous grid failures in Nigeria, which have occurred about 138 times in the last decade.
Despite recent claims by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) celebrating over 400 days without a system collapse, the recurring incidents underscore the challenges faced by the country’s power infrastructure. The frequency of grid collapses has been a persistent issue, with 2013 recording 24 collapses, 28 in 2016, and 21 in 2017, among others.
