Investigations by the EFCC have implicated Shehu in the embezzlement, where she, in collaboration with a Director of Finance, purportedly authorized the withdrawal of N44 billion from the government account within five days, spanning December 27th to 31st, 2023. The funds were allocated for poverty alleviation and other intervention schemes of the current government.

Reliable sources reveal that this year-end transfer of the unspent N44.8 billion was a recurring practice within the Ministry. However, Betta Edu, who detected the irregularity, promptly reported the incident to the EFCC.

It is alleged that the former NSIPA boss funneled the funds into individual accounts and companies through various commercial banks without obtaining approval from the President, the Federal Executive Council, or the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu.

This revelation follows the Ministry’s controversial activities under former Minister Dr. Sadiya Umar Farouq, which faced severe criticism due to ongoing investigations into multiple fraud cases related to government intervention funds such as School Feeding, Conditional Cash Transfer, and N-Power. The issues revolve around concerns of accountability and transparency, eroding public trust in the Ministry.
